When I was growing up, almost everyone made it seem like college was the only option! Even though I wasn’t passionate about college, I went to college because I felt I had to, and I got a generic business degree because I could not decide on a major.

After a few years of now working in an office, I knew that it wasn’t the right path for me.

I was burning out and I still had so many years of work ahead of me. After some reconsideration, I realized that I would do better with hands-on work. A neighbor of mine works as a heating plus A/C worker plus he let me shadow him. I was really interested in the mental work that goes into detecting a complication with a heating or cooling unit. Additionally, I enjoy that you got to actually fix the issue and engage with something hands-on. I took a leap of faith and quit my work. I enrolled in a heating and A/C training program to gain the appropriate certifications. I was able to begin working with my neighbor within a few weeks. I figure down the road, maybe I can use our supplier degree to begin my own heating plus cooling company. It feels so fantastic to have a career path that I am actually passionate about. I am so blissful I took a leap of faith and entered the heating and cooling industry.

We were still working on the modernization, but we wanted HVAC in the house

I thought that all window air conditioning units were made to fit in all windows. I measured my window area before going to purchase a window AC unit. When I got to the home center, and went back to the window air conditioning units, I was wrong about them being all the same size. They had some huge window air conditioners that I knew were not going to fit into my window although my windows were wide enough, there was no way they’re going to fit up and down. The window I wanted to put the air conditioning unit in was more of a transom size window. It wasn’t a transom, but it was wide, but not high. I thought by putting a window air conditioner into that window, I could get a bit more airflow and cooling throughout that area. When I bought my house, I knew we were going to have some unique problems. The house was nearly 200 years old, and much of it had not yet been modernized. We were still working on the modernization, but we wanted HVAC in the house. To be honest, we needed the air conditioning more than anything. Not being able to put a window air conditioning unit in that small transom size window, meant that a small area of my house was always going to be hot and humid. My next step, was to call a contractor and have them come to the house and install a normal size window so I could install my new window AC unit and get some comfort.

My brother-in-law walked into the house the other day, and he had a large box in his arms.

I asked him what was in the box, and he told me it was a window air conditioning unit.

We had central air, so I couldn’t figure out why he would be bringing a window air conditioning unit over to our house. He said that my husband called him and asked him to bring it over. I just stood there and looked at him kind of funny, wondering why my husband would want a window air conditioning unit. My husband was downstairs, and I hollered down and asked him to please come up. Five minutes later, my husband came up the stairs, and my brother-in-law was still holding the window air conditioning unit. Before my husband could say anything, my brother-in-law asked him to tell him where he should put the AC unit, because it was getting heavy. I told him to put it down on the table, but my husband told him to take it out to the garage and they would install it out there. I knew he had been wanting air conditioning so he could work in the garage during the summer, but I didn’t know that he had his brother pickup a window AC unit for him. Originally, I thought he had been going to ask the HVAC company if we could install ductwork into the garage, and not have to worry about a window AC unit. Either he talked to the HVAC company while I was at work, or he changed his mind about calling the HVAC company. Either way, we now have a new window air conditioner in the garage.

My brother is constantly updating his HVAC system.

He wants to have perfect air conditioning and heating all the time.

I know that they told us when we had our HVAC system installed, that the average life was 15 years. All because we were told 15 years, the didn’t mean that a year before that anniversary we would have a new HVAC system installed. My brother doesn’t even wait for 15 years. Every 10 years, he has a new air conditioning unit and furnace installed in his house. He said he doesn’t want to take the chance of not having other heating or air conditioning during the year. He feels that it is much less expensive to have new HVAC equipment installed every 10 years than it is to make constant repairs during the last five years of its life. On top of saving the constant repairs, he is also ensuring that they never have to go without their HVAC equipment. Two years ago, he had the air purification system installed. I can understand the air purifier. He chose to have the UV light, HEPA filter, and any other extra that you could put on to the air purifier. This house does smell very fresh and we go inside, and he tells us that even the coronavirus wasn’t able to live in his environment. I guess, it all comes down to personal taste. If he wants to waste money and install a brand-new HVAC system every 10 years, it’s his wallet that’s being used and not mine. I just know that my HVAC system is 10 years old and the HVAC technician says it is still as good as new.

Two years ago, we had central air conditioning installed in our home.

Everyone had been telling us that central air conditioning was the perfect solution to keep our home cool.

Even though we had central AC installed, I was hesitant to remove our window air conditioners. I had never thought there was anything wrong with the temperature of our house during the summer. Our window air conditioners seemed to work just fine to keep our house cool and comfortable, and there wasn’t a draft. With our central air conditioning, we seem to have areas where it is very very warm, and other areas where it is cold and drafty. When we first talked about having central AC installed, I told my wife that I thought it was waste of money. She still insisted that central air conditioning would not just make our house more comfortable, but give us some extra bargaining power when or if we ever sold our house. At that point, I didn’t even know we were getting ready to sell our house. When she said that once the kids were grown and out of our house, we may change your mind. That seemed like a logical conclusion, but I still hadn’t been convinced. She had insisted on a central air conditioning, we would still be using window air conditioning. As it is, I never worry about the AC. I still have the window air conditioning units in the windows. Maybe next year, I’ll take the window air conditioning units out of the windows and put them away, but I’ll never get rid of them. I like having a backup in case something happens to the central AC.

Last year the HVAC technician told my husband and I that our air conditioning unit should be replaced before the next summer season.

The next summer is arriving soon, and I knew we couldn’t afford to purchase a new air conditioning unit.

Instead of telling the HVAC what we were doing, we just ignored them and didn’t even call to make an appointment to have the AC unit serviced. I was so worried that our air conditioning unit wouldn’t make it through the year. What I should have been worried about was if the air conditioning unit would work at all this year. When it came time to turn the AC unit on, nothing happened. We either went without air conditioning all summer long or we sucked it up and called the HVAC company. I asked my husband what he wanted to do, knowing we couldn’t afford a new AC unit. He said we didn’t have a choice but to call the HVAC company. We had a young daughter who was always crawling around, and we couldn’t go without air conditioning. We considered purchasing a couple window AC unit, but we didn’t like the draft they caused. We called the HVAC company and asked if we could get an estimate for a new AC unit, and if they offered payment plans. When the HVAC technician arrived, he inspected the air conditioning unit, and then he looked at the thermostat. He said we lucked out because it was a dead battery in the thermostat that wasn’t allowing our AC unit to turn on.
