Let’s face it, the world is changing quickly and in many cases some of the jobs that people hold today will be obsolete in the next ten years.

I just graduated from high school so I wanted to go into a field that would be relevant no matter what.

I could have gone into a medical field because that will always be necessary but I didn’t want to go to school for the next six to eight years to get my degree. I wanted to go into a field where I could complete my education in less than four years and not end up with $100,000 in student loans. My friend told me about a trade school that he was considering and I decided to look into it. After reviewing all of the programs that they offered, and many of them would always be needed, I decided on the world Heating and Cooling. After all, the need for climate control is not going to change especially when you consider the fact that global warming is constantly changing the environment around us. According to the brochure I could complete my certification as an HVAC technician within a year to a year-and-a-half. This meant that I would be able to start earning a living in my field in far less time than many of my classmates who are going to a four-year University. In addition to receiving my education in a much faster manner I would also have far less student debt to deal with in years to come. A career in Heating and Cooling will certainly be relevant no matter what and I am looking forward to not only working in that field but possibly owning my own business one day.

I wanted to design state of the art buildings that not only functioned well but were environmentally friendly too.

I know, you are thinking that no building is friendly to the environment because it takes up green space, however, there are ways to design a structure that is less harmful to the surrounding area. One way of doing this is to make the outside blend better with its surroundings. Another is to make sure that the space is conducent to proper air flow making it more energy efficient. This allows it to have and HVAC system that does not need to run constantly to try to heat or cool the space. My senior year I took advantage of a study abroad program that allowed me to learn how buildings are designed in places with extreme temperatures. I travelled to Africa where the temperatures are scorching yet the buildings are kept cool by vegetation and low cost HVAC units. These units are enough because they have the advantage of shade to help maintain the coolness that is needed. The buildings are well insulated and sealed to keep out moisture from humidity and trap in the dry air that is created by the air conditioner and dehumidifiers. In some cases they keep the thermostat set as high as eighty degrees but the powerful dehumidifier keeps the air dry so you don’t notice the temperature as much. I learned a lot by studying the design of the structures and the way they used the HVAC systems. I will be using these techniques as much as possible in my future projects.

My girlfriend sent out invites for her bachelorette party and I was thrilled to be invited. That is until I realized that I would have to purchase a ticket to Vegas to join in the fun. I don’t mind flying but I wasn’t thrilled about buying a ticket to somewhere I never wanted to go in the first place. Many people love to vacation in the hot desert air, I am not one of them. Give me a cool, shaded vacation in the mountains and I am in Heaven. I knew that the gang would want to hang out on the strip at night and lounge by the pool during the day. If I decided to go I would want to hang out in the hotel room or in a casino during the day where it was air conditioned. At least the evenings are cooler once the sun goes down but I would be missing out on a lot of the fun during the day. I made the decision to tell my friend that I couldn’t go due to work. I told her that I didn’t have the vacation time on the books. She said that she understood but that she would miss having me with her to celebrate. I am looking forward to her wedding here at home and I am thankful that it is being held in a climate controlled space. The best weddings, in my opinion, are the ones where all the guests and the bridal party are comfortable throughout the entire event.
