Smells have always bothered me. I seem to be a little more sensitive to bad odors and other people are. I can always smell things that other people can’t. This has only got worse since I got pregnant. I’m constantly running to the restroom to throw up. Everything smells so bad. I hate to offend other people and I wish I wasn’t so sensitive to strong odors. Recently, I’ve discovered a pretty bad odor in our own house. My boyfriend didn’t notice the smell at first but it bothered me a lot. Finally, it got so bad that even he could smell it. It seemed to me that the smell got worse whenever our window air conditioner was on. It’s not super warm where we live so we only use the window air conditioner every now and then. But when we do, the stinky odor increases a lot. My boyfriend said that maybe we should clean the air conditioner and change the filter. That seems like a good idea so I went ahead and did it while he was at work. That was actually a terrible idea! It was a lot of work getting the window air conditioner apart, to begin with. Once I did, the smell was so bad. I got sick a few times cleaning and scrubbing the little air conditioner. Maybe if I wasn’t pregnant, I could have got through this without vomiting. But I was determined to get it done. an hour later, I had the window air conditioner back together and super clean. I’m happy it didn’t smell it all when I turned it back on.

My partner and I have owned our house for just over 20 years now. Both of us have many fond memories in this house and it pains us to think about parting with it. However, the house is getting to be too big for my partner and I. He has a hard time getting up and down the stairs. It would be better for both of us if we lived in a one-story home. We haven’t listed our house yet but I’m sure we will soon. However, we do have one problem: that is the basement. It’s very humid in the basement and this has caused some damage down there. For example, the carpet smells really questionable and there’s a little bit of mold on the walls. We can definitely get new carpeting and paint but I don’t want to give a new family an old headache. By that I mean I don’t want to sell our house in poor condition to somebody else. We want them to love the house as much as we have. We have tried putting dehumidifiers in the basement to help with the humidity. Those worked but we keep forgetting to empty out the water so they stopped working. My partner suggested that we put an air conditioner in the basement to take care of the humidity. After all, air conditioners were initially invented as dehumidifiers. So we got a little window air conditioning unit and we put it in the one window in the basement. We’ve left it running non-stop and it does seem to be helping. Even the smell is mostly gone out of the carpet now. I’m thinking we might just need to rent a carpet cleaner and do a little bit of painting and the house will be ready to go on the market.

I used to love working the graveyard shift in a call center. You get very few calls and management is home asleep in bed. They’re not there to bug me. However, recently, the big boss had a new smart thermostat installed to control our HVAC system. Unfortunately, the smart thermostat is locked and only the big boss can adjust it. The smart thermostat is set to a comfortable 73 degrees all day long. However, it turns off at night. So I have no air conditioning most of my shift. I’ve told my managers about this problem but they can’t change the thermostat themselves. They’ve talked to the big boss, or so they tell me, but he hasn’t done anything about it. So every night, the air conditioner turns off and stays off until about an hour before I’m scheduled to leave. Even though it’s night, it’s still very warm outside and this makes it warm inside. When I get warm I get sleepy. Obviously it’s also uncomfortable. I started putting the idea out there that maybe I could work from home. I have control of my thermostat at home and I don’t see why I couldn’t answer calls just as easily from my own home. That would be ideal. My managers said they are thinking about it but I don’t know what that means. They need to do something though. Either fix the air conditioning system or let me work in the comfort of my own air conditioning system. If they don’t, I’m going to have to look for a new job.

When my associate and I were in the market for a modern condo my associate and I found one my associate and I liked a lot. There was only one problem: the Heating and A/C system didn’t work. The home had built in central heating and cooling however neither the heating system nor the a/c worked at all. The home had been listed for almost a year so my associate and I put in a stipulation that my associate and I would buy the home however only if the original owners replaced the Heating and A/C system, however well they replace the Heating and A/C system and my associate and I have now been living in our modern home for about 9 months. All was going well until the heating system abruptly stopped toiling. My wonderful friend and I called up a local Heating and A/C supplier and they looked our heating system over. After that they looked over our entire Heating and A/C system. Apparently my associate and I got shafted. This Heating and A/C system is the cheapest of the cheap. Heating and A/C companies don’t even sell them, you have to order them online and then install them yourself or hire a handyman to install it. Apparently my associate and I were lucky the Heating and A/C system lasted this long. They are known to only last about 6 months. So now my associate and I have to get a whole modern Heating and A/C system installed. Yes, my associate and I did double check what the Heating and A/C supplier told us. My wonderful friend and I didn’t just take their word for it, however but everything they said was completely true. So now my associate and I need to fork over about 6 thousand dollars for a modern Heating and A/C system that will last us for a decade or more. That is such a pain however at least my associate and I will know the Heating and A/C system is decent.

I had no idea how pressing weather conditions control apparently is to professionally painting, then my finance is a painter and she is particularly good; She had already sold a few of her paintings and gotten quite a bit of money doing so… It wasn’t until last year that she particularly started making enough money that she could quit her day task.

I have seen her painting studio in the finished basement of her home. It is truly nice, however, I was paying a lot more attention to the special sound system she has set up and I didn’t notice the Heating and A/C system at all. However, I got collegeed on how pressing official temperatures and humidity are to painting recently! That is because my associate and I are going to buy a home together and transfer about one thousand miles to the north. I got a wonderful task option there. Since my finance can paint from condo she was great with moving. However, she said my associate and I truly must get wonderful weather conditions control in the basement. This means a built in humidifier, dehumidifier, heating and cooling. Now that I understand why my associate and I just need to figure out the particulars. I am leaning towards having humidity control in the whole home! After all, the Heating and A/C vents go into the finished basement in the modern condo too. My fiance thinks it would be better to have a separate system for the basement because she might want it particularly tepid or particularly cold and not want the whole home at that temperature. That makes sense too however it will cost us more.

When the mountains nearby burn there is nothing for us to do but close up the house and blast the air conditioning. We are not so close to the mountains that we are ever in any real danger but we get a lot of smoke when the mountains burn. Ash falls down from the sky like it is snowing. That ash and smoke get into anything and everything. Thankfully our HVAC system works on a closed system. This means that the air is taken from inside the house, cooled, and returned to the house. Air is not taken from outside. We also have really good sealing on all of our doors and windows. But, of course, we still must go in and out throughout the day so some smoke gets in. For that, we have a really good filtration system built right into our HVAC system. It has UV lighting and more than one filter. It works great. It took us about a year to get everything installed in the house like it is. During our first fire season here, we could actually see the smoke inside of the house. My asthma was really bad and no one could breathe right. We all started researching ways to keep the smoke out. It was either that or we would have to move. The special filtration system cost quite a bit, so did the sealing, but it was so worth it. It makes our home livable, no matter what is going on outside. I think the filtration system helps with our allergies, in general, too. I am so glad we didn’t have to move because I really do love it here.

I was reading online how your HVAC system should be cleaned out and serviced once or twice a year.

I am kind of handy with a tool belt so I decided I should just do it myself.

I watched lots of videos and read up on everything. Then I got to work with my tools, a vacuum and some oil. I took my time and was very careful but when I put everything back together, my HVAC system simply would not turn on. I took it apart again and looked at all of the connection but everything was right. I knew I had to call in the professionals. This was over my head. A real HVAC company came out the very next day and the technician took one look at my HVAC system, flipped a switch on the side, and said, “well here is your problem.” I felt so stupid. I had simply turned off my HVAC system like you might turn off a light switch. The switch must have gotten bumped when I was moving things around. It might have even gotten caught on the cleaning rag or something. I did not even know there was an off switch. Other than that, the technician said I did a good job cleaning, for the most part. He gave me some hints and tips for next time but he also indicated that his company cleans HVAC systems for very little money. It sounded like a good deal but I kind of just want to do it myself. How else will I ever learn?

I found another compressor online and told him the cost.

I am the go to guy for small house repairs in the family. I guess I have just always been handy with tools and figuring out how stuff works. I certainly don’t mind helping out the rest of the family from time to time and they usually know what is on my level and what they need to call out a professional for. They also usually wait until normal waking hours before calling me. But last night I got a call from my uncle at 2 am. It seems his air conditioner had stopped working and he wanted me to come and see if I could fix it. I have never gotten along well with this uncle, he is a bit of a loudmouth and has strong political opinions and I just don’t like being around him. Nonetheless, I said I would come and take a look in the morning. He called again at 7 am and wanted to know when I was coming over and then he complained about being hot all night with no A/C, as if that was my fault. I made it to his house about two hours later and started looking around his HVAC unit. It appeared to me that the compressor was seized up. I found another compressor online and told him the cost. He wanted me to pay for it! He said, “Well this is your show.” I told him that, actually they don’t make the compressor he needs anymore and he will have to call out the air conditioning professionals. He said he was glad he didn’t buy the compressor that was the wrong fit and that I am what is wrong with young people. I really dodged a bullet here.

A client of ours called about a bad smell coming out of her HVAC vents.

• I was dispatched for a vent cleaning and possible vent sealing.

When your vents stink, it can be anything from mold to a dead animal the crawled into them and died. Thankfully, this one did not end up being a dead animal but it was a strange one. It seems that vent was not covered in the kitchen and their 6 year-old child had been throwing food down there, unbeknownst to the parents. I guess this is a family that has to clean their plates and the kid just didn’t like certain food. Whatever the cause, there was now several weeks of old molding food in the HVAC vent that I had to clean out. And the house stunk. Man did it smell bad. The lady of the house had some scented candles around but it did little to help the situation. Apparently they have been trying to figure out where the smell was coming from for some time. I ended up doing a complete and thorough vent cleaning. I also cleaned the HVAC system really good and installed charcoal and baking soda filters. It took all day and was really nasty work. Most of the food in the vent was unrecognizable. It had all molded together or, in some cases, turned to a sticky, watery liquid. I also put a cover over any vents missing cover and suggested the child’s seat be moved away from the vent for future meals. I doubt I will have to tell our clients this twice as they were rather upset to discover the cause of the stink.
