Lots of energy use in hot climates

I prefer the clouds! Especially where I live. I live in a space where the weather is always hot. It could be Christmas and it would be in the 87’s. I don’t care for it really, but when there are clouds this time of the year it gives my central air conditioning a break. I will not need to turn on the central heating and air conditioning method unit. By not having to use the central heating and air conditioning device it saves me on energy use, which in turn helps my yearly electric bills. My utility bills are high as it is because of the near constant use of the central heating and a/c, then using your central heating and air conditioning method near all year round with no breaks causes lots of energy use. I am sure the energy companies are happy about it though, and the sad part is, for weather conditions like this there are no energy saving tips, but the standard energy saving tips for reduced central heating and air conditioning method use is to get portable furnaces and portable a/cs! However that will not work here, so the clouds are the best thing one could hope for. So I am truly happy when the clouds show up like this and are able to provide my central heating and air conditioning method the well deserved break that it easily needs. My heating and A/C device does have the best SEER rating and still my utility bills are high because of the constant use due to where I live in the country.

I love cloudy days because it is cool

I love the clouds, especially where I live. I live in an area where the weather is constantly hot. It could be Christmas and it would be in the 83’s. I really hate it! But when there are clouds this time of the year it gives my central a/c a break. I will not need to turn on the central heating and a/c method unit. By not having to use the central heating and a/c device it saves me on energy use, which in turn helps my electric bills. My energy bills are high as it is because of the near constant use of the central heating and a/c! Using your central heating and a/c method near all year round with no breaks causes lots of energy use. I am sure the energy companies are cheerful about it though, and the worried part is, for a climate like this there are no energy saving tips. The energy saving tips for reduced central heating and a/c method use is to get portable section heating systems and portable a/cs, that will not work here. So the clouds are the best thing one could hope for. So I am truly ecstatic when the clouds show up like this and are able to supply my central heating and a/c method the well deserved cut that it legitimately needs. My heating and A/C device does have the best SEER rating and still our energy bills are high because of the constant use due to where I live in the country.

I am glad to give the heater and air conditioner a break

So I am really blissful when the clouds show up like this and are able to provide my central heating and a/c plan the well deserved cut that it really needs

I appreciate the clouds! Especially where I live, and I live in a part where the weather is constantly hot. It could be Christmas and it would be in the 88’s. I do not like it really! But when there are clouds this time of the year it gives my central a/c a break. I will not need to turn on the central heating and a/c plan unit. By not having to use the central heating and a/c component it saves me on energy use, which in turn helps my daily electric bills, my utility bills are high as it is because of the near constant use of the central heating and cooling system. Using your central heating and a/c plan near all year round with no breaks causes lots of energy use. I am sure the energy companies are happy about it though. The concerning part is, for a climate like this there are no energy saving tips. Loving the clouds

I love the clouds.

Especially where I live.

I live in an area where the weather is constantly hot. It could be Christmas and it would be in the 80’s. I hate it really. Save your money when you see ads for cheap “personal air coolers” on TV

There are a handful of decent products to find in corny TV infomercials, but it’s no surprise to anyone that many of them are junk or outright worthless.

  • I spent a good chunk of cash on a “cold heat” soldering iron that supposedly only worked when you touched it to metal or to the end of a long wire of lead solder.

Unfortunately, the tiny induction heater in the device wasn’t strong enough to melt solder, so it never actually worked no matter how many times I tried the wretched thing. I even looked at forum posts as recent as a few years ago and people are still complaining about these terrible things over 10 years after they were first released. But there are equally terrible products with the infamous “as seen on TV” label nowadays. For instance, my frustratingly naive brother was harping to me last week about this $20 “portable air conditioner” that he had ordered from a TV commercial. I looked it up and discovered that his $20 “portable air conditioner” is actually called a “personal air cooler,” and it’s nothing more than a micro-sized evaporative cooler. Evaporative coolers use a simple fan to push air through a wet medium, thus causing the moisture to evaporate into the air, thereby dropping the temperature in the process. But this natural cooling from moisture evaporation only works in dry climates. My brother was under the impression that he could take this tiny little evaporative cooler camping and get air conditioning inside the tent. Since our outdoor humidity here hovers above 80% in the summer, the little “personal air cooler” isn’t even going to work!

The charcoal filters in my a/c knock down the odor from our dogs

I looked around and that’s how I found charcoal-coated air conditioner and furnace filters.

It was normal for me growing up in a house with lots of dogs that were rarely bathed. I’m sure the house had a strong odor to anyone coming in from outside for the very first time, but it was as normal to me as the smell of candles is to someone who burns them daily. In fact, you quickly forget there’s even an odor there at all. I feel embarrassed now remembering the times I would invite a date over to my house without realizing that they were probably put off by the intense dog odor. After I moved out, I lived free of pets for years until I met my current boyfriend. He has several dogs and was worried that I would be upset by this when we were out on our first date. Although I was technically free of pets at the time, I told him that I loved dogs intensely and had a house full of them growing up. This brought us closer together and I was happy to be around dogs again when he graciously asked me to move in with him a year later. However, unlike me during childhood, he was aware that his dogs gave off their normal odor for their species. It’s not necessarily unpleasant if they’re regularly bathed, but he still asked for my advice regarding the issue. I looked around and that’s how I found charcoal-coated air conditioner and furnace filters. There are mentions of these special HVAC filters on several of the biggest pet forums on the internet. Since they’re available at most of the local supercenters in my area, I pulled the trigger on the filter and was pleasantly surprised with the results. The charcoal-coated a/c filters don’t completely remove all of our pet odors, but they make a massive difference.

It's easier to maintain your air conditioner if you get into the habit

If I was going to have kids right now, I would focus on teaching them tough lessons before they run into inconceivable situations when they’re older.

I’d show them what it’s like to take a car to the mechanic for an oil change and explain what happens to the car if you don’t.

On top of that, I’d teach them what it would be like if you suddenly stopped taking care of your car and no longer had it to get around town for work, shopping, or basic errands. I know this might sound scary for a child, but it’s going to be even scarier when they encounter this adversity for real and are suddenly faced with a situation that they cannot control, affect, or recover from. One easy lesson that doesn’t require making them worry about their own survival is basic air conditioner and furnace maintenance. This starts with showing them the importance of being careful with the thermostat, because they could inadvertently turn it up too high or too low for hours on end and risk frying the fan motor, cracking the evaporator coil, or burning up the compressor outside. Once they’re old enough, I’ll teach them how to replace the filters in the air conditioner and furnace. It’s harder to forget this important step of HVAC maintenance if it has been ingrained in you as a regular habit. My college roommates destroyed our home’s air conditioner when I left for a few weeks to visit family. Although it was a rental, we were responsible for replacing the air conditioner filter. I told them to remember while I was gone, and to also never sweep dust into the floor air-returns. I came back and discovered that the a/c was no longer reaching the temperature on the thermostat and had to call the landlord immediately.

I deducted my new HVAC system from my taxes because I'm self-employed

Filing taxes is hard enough when you have a normal job that handles most of the paperwork for you.

I was so inept that I even struggled to utilize the online tools provided by companies like Turbotax and H&R Block.

One year I gave up trying to do it alone and hired someone to help me prepare my taxes for me. It’s hard when you don’t know about all of the deductions of which you qualify, or how to even fill them out properly in the first place. I messed up my taxes one year and ended up paying a tax bill that was higher than it should have been. This year the tax preparer that I found told me that I could potentially deduct my new HVAC system from my tax bill because I’m self-employed and use my house for my business. This was an amazing thing to hear because the air conditioner and furnace were a huge expense for me this year that I wasn’t prepared to pay, as I was hoping that my central HVAC system would last for another five years. Once my tax preparer confirmed that I could legitimately deduct the cost of my HVAC system in the line for my business expenses, I was absolutely thrilled. This actually lowered my tax bill by $400. Honestly, I was not expecting to have that big of a savings on my final tax bill, but I was happy regardless. Buying a new air conditioner and furnace is no simple task, and a $400 tax rebate is nothing to scoff at even if it’s a small fraction of the price of the heating and cooling systems combined.

Using radiant foil insulation in my attic to retain heat during cold weather

I learned a few tricks over the years working for my brother-in-law’s construction business.

He gave me a job when I was in a tough position following the dissolution of my failed attempt at creating a company of my own.

He needed an assistant in the office to show some of his employees the ropes as new ones were being hired for various behind-the-desk positions. Some of these people worked in sales while others were only scheduling or front desk employees. Although he hired me so his employees could learn from me, I feel like I learned more than anyone else from our employment arrangement. Everyday I was able to chat with some of the smartest and most experienced contractors that I have ever met. These guys would tell me about the best glass companies for impact-resistant windows and the most affordable lumber yards for home remodeling projects. But my favorite home maintenance tip that I learned while working for my brother-in-law’s company was the use of reflective radiant-foil insulation that comes rolled up in varying widths and dimensions. They told me to use it along the walls and ceiling of my attic to reflect rising heat during the winter and push it back into the house. On top of the insulative capabilities during winter, they also reflect a lot of radiant heat generated from the sun’s UV rays during the hot summer seasons here. I have already improved my home’s energy efficiency and all I had to do was buy a few rolls of that amazing foil insulation sheeting from the hardware store.

I just purchased leak detection alarms for my water heater and HVAC system

You install these small probes at the base of your water heater and air handler separately, and each has a wire that runs up to a plastic box that looks a lot like my smoke detectors

I hate having so much anxiety all of the time, but I guess it serves a purpose. If I hadn’t experienced so much anxiety over taking my car in for an oil change, the mechanic probably wouldn’t have spotted the problem in the appropriate amount of time. Having a care-free attitude about everything in life will land yourself in tough situations that you can’t get yourself out of without help from others. One of my best friends from high school sold his car and got rid of his apartment one summer because he suddenly had the urge to live in nature. He didn’t consider how hot the weather would be since it was July at the time. Unfortunately, he only lasted two months before he was looking to rent a room out of a shared house, now that he had depleted his savings and sold any and all of the assets he once owned. I warned him to wait and live in nature once he could handle keeping the rest of his life in balance, but he didn’t listen to me. I’m the opposite, I am neurotic about avoiding risks. That’s why I ordered leak detection alarms for my water heater and HVAC system. They’re similar to a smoke detector in that they will emit a loud screeching noise whenever the alarm is triggered. You install these small probes at the base of your water heater and air handler separately, and each has a wire that runs up to a plastic box that looks a lot like my smoke detectors. These leak detection alarms will let me know if my air conditioner ever back-flows from a condensate leak, or if the base of my water heater starts to corrode and break-apart.
