A childhood with no climate control

I grew up in a remote condo that did not have any form of climate controls.

Well, I guess that’s not absolutely true, because there were two ceiling fans, box fans, plus we opened the windows to let in fresh air on afternoons that were cool enough for it.

Both of My parents felt that installing a central heating plus air unit would be a frivolity; absolutely unnecessary for our family. While I was young, I never entirely thought about the fact that we didn’t have central heating plus air so I suppose I was cool with it, no pun intended. The thing is, we lived in a very mild climate. At the worst, in the chilly Winters we have the odd cold snap that would not last very long. Conversely, in the Summers, tepid spells would last for a few afternoons plus then things would return to the mid to upper 60s, quite even-handed temperatures, since the humidity level was so low compared to other parts of the nation. Put simply, we didn’t need central heating plus air because we could rely on the weather to be merciful for the vast majority of the time when it came to comfort. I can still remember experiencing cool Summer evenings, on which we left the windows open to let the breeze in. My entryway was perfectly cool plus ventilated plus the chirp of the crickets plus croak of the frogs always put me to sleep so sweetly… During the Winters, we simply relied on the home’s insulation when things got a little too cold. The two of us also wore extra layers plus put a few big logs on the fire in the evenings every now plus then.
