I’ve got a feeling this summer could be a killer.

My husband and I bought a small winter home, down south.

  • We wanted to get out of the cold of winter and find some warmth.

We knew we had to have the air conditioning unit inspected before summer. We spent our summers up north where the humidity isn’t as bad, and the heat waves last for days instead of the entire summer. When we had the air conditioning unit inspected, the HVAC tech told us we had to have it replaced. This was not upsetting news since we already knew this was going to be a possible option. While the air conditioning unit was being replaced, we were using our ceiling fans. Unfortunately, the ceiling fan in the living room malfunctioned. It ended up starting a fire in the ceiling, which quickly engulfed our entire home. We lost everything. We wanted to have the house rebuilt, but it was going to take about six months. We paid to have the house rebuilt, bought our necessities and headed south to our winter home. It wasn’t until we moved that we realized the air conditioning in our winter home wasn’t working. Once again, we had to call the HVAC company. The HVAC technician told us the air conditioning unit’s motor was frozen. He said it appeared to have stopped a long time ago, and we explained how we only spent our winters here. He said we had to replace the air conditioner. I almost laughed thinking about the debacle of having a new AC unit installed in our other home. At least it was cool enough yet that we could use fans in the house, which I watched very closely.
