My landlord won’t allow window air conditioners

My landlord won’t allow window air conditioners in my apartment, and I am so frustrated. When I began renting this apartment, I noticed that it didn’t have a central air conditioner. I didn’t expect a rental apartment to have a central air conditioner. Sure, if the apartment would have had an air conditioner, I would have been happy. However, since the air conditioner wasn’t present, I could easily install a few window air conditioners. I already had some air conditioners that I was using in my old apartment, and I figured that it would be very easy to install these new air conditioners. I signed the lease, and while I was moving in, I installed my new air conditioners in the windows. When the landlord came to visit a few weeks later, he told me that I had to take the air conditioners out of the windows. According to him, he didn’t allow window air conditioners. I was very angry. First of all, there was nothing in the lease that said that I couldn’t have a window air conditioner, and I didn’t think that the landlord should have the right to say that I couldn’t use the air conditioners. I was renting this house, so I should be able to do anything that I wanted with my apartment. Also, if the landlord didn’t want us to use window air conditioners, then he should have installed a central air conditioner. This is in the South, and air conditioners were more than a luxury. Air conditioners are absolutely essential for comfort in the South.
