We had rats living in the ductwork

I hadn’t been to the farm in some time.

  • We lived in the city and left a few workers in charge.

Our farm caretaker did such an excellent job that we felt much better with him around. The plan was to work for several more years then move to the farm. We wanted it to grow and start making enough money to sustain our family. However, when the pandemic hit, we had to change plans. Suddenly my partner and I were working full time at home and felt pointless renting an apartment in the city. It cut into our income, and we’d still manage to do the same work at the farm. We planned the move, got out of our lease, and moved into our farmhouse. The space was good and came with a gas furnace. Once fall was in sight, we had to get the furnace serviced in time for winter. We decided first to try it out and heard the sound of rats running in the ducts due to the heat. My partner suggested we adopt a cat since we had brought some chicken to keep. In addition, we consulted with an AC repair person to come solve the duct issue. We felt parts of the house and cold patches. It meant the rats had interfered with the duct system. The AC repair person did his best to get rid of the rats’ nests. Also, he sealed all the gaps that they used to get into the ducts in the first place and make the nests. We also requested further duct sealing to prevent any cold spots and also got a house cat to help us keep the rats away.
