Trading radiators for baseboard heaters
When we purchased our house, I wasn’t thrilled with the boiler heater in the basement and the ancient radiators in every room.
- The heating system was obviously very old and I worried about safety.
The radiators would hiss whenever they started up and become extremely hot to the touch. Although the system provided plenty of heat to keep the house warm even during the worst winter weather, I wanted to make some improvements. I finally called in an HVAC contractor to evaluate the heating equipment and make some recommendations. After inspecting the boiler, the technician told me that with some maintenance it could be expected to operate efficiently and reliably for quite a few more years. He suggested that we replace the radiators with baseboard heaters located around the perimeter of the room. The baseboards are streamlined, safe and silent. I don’t need to worry about the kids or pets touching them. I am not forced to arrange furniture to accommodate them. The heat comes from all the way around the room and is introduced at floor level, which creates a very even temperature. There are no drafts or cold spots. Plus, the boiler includes zone control. There is an independent thermostat installed in each room that allows temperature settings to be customized according to the specific requirements, occupancy and personal preferences. This feature saves quite a bit of money and minimizes energy waste. Overall the boiler is wonderfully efficient and clean. It doesn’t overly dry out our air or require anything but annual maintenance. Now that I’ve made some improvements, I am totally happy with the home’s heating system.
