Opting for an electric heater for the barn

My parents’ retirement plan was to sell their house in the suburbs and buy a home and a ranch in the countryside.

  • My mother has a love for animals especially horses but the perfect pair.

They had long found the perfect farmhouse that had a house and the bonus was that it had a barn. The barn needed a few improvements including sealing it, especially in the winter to avoid loss of heat in the cold months. The house at the ranch had an impressive hybrid system but neither the heat pump nor the furnace was big enough to work in the house and also the barn. This meant that we had to do a new furnace/heater installation so we called the heating dealership to find out which would be the best heat and AC product for the barn project. The HVAC repairman came to the farm so that he could give us an accurate cost and size of the electric furnace that we would need. After a talk with the technician, my parents asked for a hydronic heating system for the barn and with that, the animals would be comfortable all year long. It also meant that my mother would have a year’s supply of eggs since he had already mapped out where the chicken coup would be. Even the horses would enjoy their new home. The installation went on smoothly and the barn was ready for any weather. We would have to keep a close relationship with the heating business since we would need regular HVAC maintenance, new air filters, and maybe an occasional boiler repair. The electric heater would power the underfloor heating and that too would need regular heating maintenance.
